Almost a year ago, I went to Christian Bok poetry reading.  He emphasized new as a value, a fundamental value. He told us that we have to be able to produce surprises in order to make a difference.

After the reading a professor of mine, Deborah Bowen, approached me and said, “That is a man who has not witnessed the birth of a baby.”

Babies being born is ordinary, it happens every day. Yet, yesterday when I saw my dear friend holding her brand new son, it was a surprising moment, one in which wonder never felt so full.
